Weight vs Body FatÂ
There is always a dilemma when we discuss weight. The common words uttered the world over by people are “I am fat”. Do they mean they are overweight or that they carry unhealthy amounts of fat in the body or that they simply look different in the mirror!
From wellness point of view there are two serious considerations. From Physical Wellness perspective, the question is what is healthy weight and fat combination. From the Psychological perspective it is how we look in the mirror. The one that should concern us foremost is whether we carry the right mix of weight and fat.
Weight loss doesn't always mean fat loss.
Remember
• You can be overfat but NOT overweight
• You can be overweight but NOT overfat
• When you exercise and diet properly you CAN LOSE fat but NOT your weight.
The following table describes body fat ranges and their associated categories.
Description | Women | Men |
| Essential fat | 12-15% | 2-5% |
| Athletes | 16-20% | 6-13% |
| Fitness | 21-24% | 14-17% |
| Acceptable | 25-31% | 18-25% |
| Overweight | 32%+ | 25%+ |
Knowing your body fat percentage can also help you determine if your weight control goals are realistic. Your body fat percentage is simply the percentage of fat your body contains. If you are 80 kg and 10% fat, it means that your body consists of 8 kg fat and 72 kg lean body mass (bone, muscle, organ tissue, blood and everything else).
A certain amount of fat is essential to bodily functions. Fat regulates body temperature, cushions and insulates organs and tissues and is the main form of the body's energy storage.
